business cards

Your business card is an extension of you. It represents what you do, who you work for, and the best way to contact you to utilize your unique skills. It should make a good first impression, and potentially stand out in a stack of business cards. So what should a good, unique business card include? How should it look? How should it feel? There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to a modern business card and it shouldn’t be an afterthought. Here’s what you should think about when it comes to those little cards that stand for what you do.

What contact information should a business card have?

A standard business card can have as much or as little information as you want. It can have all your social media handles, portfolio, website, and more. Alternatively, it can be simple with just your name and email. Here’s what to consider:

Name:

This may be obvious, but a business card should always have your name. Your name is your identification, and even if Shakespeare would argue that any other name would smell as sweet, it should still go on your business card.

Phone Number:

Your phone number may be a good addition to your business card, especially if you own your own business or are in sales. Others may feel wary about readily giving out their phone number if they don’t feel like getting bombarded with calls on their personal phone line.

A good option is to create a business line to feel more secure about giving out your phone number. This is especially true if you are self-employed or have your own business. If you have a Google account, or Gmail, Google offers free phone numbers using Google Voice, which may be a good option.

Email:

Email is normally the most efficient and professional way of communication. Including your email as the primary mode of contact on your business card is important.

Title:

Whoever has your business card is going to want to know what you do. That way, they’ll know how you can help them or what service you provide. Your work title is an essential part of your business card.

Website/Portfolio:

Consider including your website or portfolio on your business cards. That way, your past work experiences are easily available and accessible. Your website is a good place to point people to see some of your previous projects, and therefore, good information to include on your business card.

Social Media Handles:

In our modern day and age, our social media profiles give insight into who we are and what we do besides work. Social media profiles can give business card recipients an idea of your hobbies and personality. Your Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter profiles provide a little extra touch to your work portfolio. If you have a blog, you can also add this to your business card.

What should a premium business card look like?

Whether it’s embossed, engraved, or on gloss or matte paper, business card design shouldn’t be taken lightly. Business cards can be on differently weighted paper which can help make your card stand out. Your logo, website, or phone number can be raised, or embossed, and a different color to further accentuate important information.

Furthermore, a uniquely-cut business card or different business card size can further help your card to stand out from the crowd. Modern business cards can be rectangular, square, or even circular! Rounded corner business cards can tell a story about your brand as can traditional sharp corner business cards. Imagine your circle business card sitting in a card holder. It’s bound to leave an impression!

Here are the different types of business card design options to truly make your card one of a kind.

Embossing:

Embossing and debossing is the process of raising or depressing images or designs on paper. Embossed designs are raised while debossed patterns are carved into the card.

Finishing:

There are multiple types of finishing or UV coating to make business cards more noticeable. Glossy finishes can make the card shiny and bright, while matte finishes can make the card muted and subdued with a soft touch. Glossy cards can stand out, but they also show fingerprints more clearly. Matte finishes can look modern and professional with the right design but they tend to be a bit pricier.

Paper Weight:

Consider heavy paper to give your card weight and substance. But also keep in mind that if the recipient has your square business card in his or her wallet, that it doesn’t take up too much room. There are three main premium paper stocks for business cards:

  • 100-pound gloss cover (thin)
  • 14-point cardstock (standard)
  • 16-point cardstock (thicker)
  • 32-point (ultra thick)

Die-Cutting:

Die-cutting is the process of cutting out shapes. The designs can be die-cut out of the business cards or added from different materials like plastic, foil, or wood. Plastic business cards can feel like a credit card, sending the message that you are valuable! Foil business cards can be flashy enough to catch an interested eye and start a conversation. It’s all about being creative!
